ASUU CALLS FOR PROBE OF NATIONAL UNIVERSITY COMMISSION

IBADAN — The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, said Professor Julius Okojie led National Universities Commission, NUC, should be probed over alleged fraudulent practices on university accreditation in the country.
The union making this demand, through its National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu and Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Olusegun Ajiboye, argued that the Act establishing the NUC and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, must be reviewed.
They wondered how Prof. Okojie could still declare that all was well despite the perceived rot in the university system.

“NUC to us in ASUU has outlived its usefulness. When government gives appointment, they know the kind of people they take and most of the time they are people who can compromise anything.
“Very recently, the Rivers State University of Technology conducted an examination under some fraudulent situations when academic staff was on strike and NUC came out to say the examination was conducted under normal conditions.

“The fraud going in NUC over accreditation of courses in Nigerian universities must stop. If JAMB is working well, there will be no need for post JAMB and that is why we are saying the laws that established JAMB should also be reviewed.”
On the strike embarked upon by the academic union, Dr. Aremu said: “On the part of government, they are talking about re-negotiation and we are saying we cannot be talking about re-negotiation when we have not implemented the agreement on ground.

“It took us three years of struggle to get the government to enter into one agreement with us in 2009.” We at the level of full implementation of that agreement. At the level at which. On 2009 agreement we stand.”
Dr. Ajiboye felt that people should begin to think beyond the ASUU agreement.
